Midwife

Historically, the midwife was the most experienced woman in the community who was called to assist the laboring woman with the birth of her child. She had little or no formal training. Today’s Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is educated as a nurse first, then receives additional training in obstetrics and gynecology. The CNM must pass a national board certification exam before practicing as a Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). As an APRN the CNM cares for women of all ages …. from menarche through menopause. Nurse-Midwives are trained to treat pregnancy, labor and birth as a normal process in a healthy woman’s reproductive life. The CNM listens, supports and guides the healthy woman through her labor, birth and postpartum experience with fewer interventions. Most Nurse-Midwives manage low risk women in the hospital setting, some practice in birth centers and fewer attend home births. All Nurse-Midwives practice in collaboration with Obstetricians who are available should an emergency or operative delivery be required. Schedule a visit with one of our Nurse-Midwives and experience the difference.
